Infrastructure and Environmental Responsibility: Building a Resilient Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon’s aging infrastructure and environmental challenges have reached a critical point, impacting the quality of life for residents across the city. From outdated sewer systems and recurring flooding to illegal pollution and crumbling public buildings, our city’s infrastructure demands immediate attention. We must act now to modernize, protect, and future-proof Mount Vernon for generations to come.

Outdated Sewer System and Flooding
Mount Vernon’s sewer system is not only outdated but dangerously inadequate. Homes on the south side of the city are regularly flooded during rainstorms, leaving residents with costly damages and unsafe living conditions. These flooding issues stem from decades of neglect and a failure to modernize our infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing city. Addressing this issue is not optional—it’s a necessity.

Illegal Dumping and Environmental Neglect
The Village of Bronxville’s illegal dumping of raw sewage into the Hunts Woods river is an environmental outrage. This pollution not only harms our natural ecosystems but also puts the health and safety of Mount Vernon residents at risk. This blatant disregard for environmental responsibility must end, and I will work tirelessly to hold Bronxville accountable while advocating for stronger environmental protections for our community.

Aging Public Buildings
Our public buildings, many of which are aging and poorly maintained, reflect the neglect of our city’s infrastructure. Schools, Firehouses, The Police Department, and other municipal buildings are the backbone of our community, and their deterioration signals a lack of commitment to the services and spaces that residents rely on daily. These facilities need immediate investment to ensure they are safe, accessible, and fit for purpose.

Terrible Traffic Conditions
Mount Vernon’s roadways are plagued by congestion, potholes, and poor traffic management. These issues not only make daily commutes frustrating but also discourage businesses and visitors from engaging with our city. Modernizing traffic patterns, repairing roads, and implementing smart traffic solutions will be key to improving our city’s mobility and overall appeal.

Our Plan for Action
As your City Council representative, I will prioritize:

  • Modernizing the sewer system to alleviate flooding and improve water management, particularly in the south side neighborhoods.
  • Holding Bronxville accountable for illegal sewage dumping and working with regional partners to clean and protect the Hunts Woods river and other natural resources.
  • Investing in public building renovations to create safe, modern, and energy-efficient facilities for residents.
  • Improving traffic conditions through road repairs, better signage, and strategic traffic flow solutions to reduce congestion.

By addressing Mount Vernon’s infrastructure and environmental challenges head-on, we can create a city that is not only resilient to today’s demands but also prepared for the future. Together, we can build a safer, greener, and more livable Mount Vernon.
