Economic Development: Revitalizing Mount Vernon’s Potential

Mount Vernon has untapped potential to become a thriving hub for businesses and commerce, yet we lag behind neighboring municipalities in generating sales tax revenue. This missed opportunity stems from a lack of investment in our business infrastructure, public safety, and community partnerships. To unlock this vital revenue stream, we must focus on supporting local businesses, attracting new investments, and revitalizing key areas of our city.

Building stronger relationships with local businesses is essential. Mount Vernon’s business owners are vital partners in our city’s growth, yet they often face unnecessary hurdles that hinder their success. By fostering open communication, reducing bureaucratic red tape, and offering incentives for growth, we can create an environment where businesses can thrive.

Improving infrastructure and public safety is also critical. Businesses cannot succeed in areas plagued by poor roads, outdated facilities, and a lack of security. Investing in modern infrastructure and ensuring that our public safety initiatives prioritize business districts will make Mount Vernon a more attractive destination for shoppers and entrepreneurs alike.

Specific areas, such as the Prospect Avenue corridor and our downtown business districts, require focused attention. Blight in these regions not only detracts from the city’s appearance but also discourages investment. By removing abandoned and unsafe structures, cleaning up these areas, and supporting redevelopment, we can breathe new life into neighborhoods that have been neglected for far too long.

As your City Council representative, I will work to:

  • Forge partnerships with local businesses to identify their needs and eliminate barriers to success.
  • Invest in infrastructure improvements, including roads, lighting, and public spaces, to create a more welcoming environment.
  • Enhance public safety in business districts to attract shoppers, visitors, and new enterprises.
  • Collaborate with developers and community stakeholders to remove blight and revitalize areas like Prospect Avenue and downtown Mount Vernon.

A strong local economy benefits everyone, providing more jobs, increased sales tax revenue, and a higher quality of life for all residents. Together, we can transform Mount Vernon into a city where businesses thrive, neighborhoods flourish, and our collective potential is finally realized.
